The Jewish Food Mafia

News Flash-Mezonos Maven in Flatbush, certified kosher by the OK and the Hisachdus Harabonnim(only two agencies certified them kosher, that's the problem)was caught operating on Shabbos. This establishment is owned and run by Black Hatters.

An acquaintance of mine asked me about the kosher industry at a business gathering. Someone responded to him by saying when he got home he should look at the food and non-food products with certain symbols on the labels.

This is what he writes.

"On arriving at my residence, I immediately went to the pantry to verify that what I had just learned was actually true. Sure enough, most of the packaged and canned foods from major companies, like Proctor & Gamble and others, did have the (U), the (K) or other similar markings. The Arrowhead water bottle, the instant Folgers Coffee, the Kelloggs box, the Jiff Peanut Butter, the Pepper container, the Trader Joe's tea box and even the Glads plastic sandwich bags carton had the (U) or (K) mark on them.

We needed a little more verification so we called two major companies to asked some questions. We chose Proctor & Gamble that markets the Folgers Coffee and the Clorox Company that manufactures the Glads plastic zip lock sandwich bags. Each of the two companies, as well as most others, have 1-800 telephone numbers printed on their packages for consumers to call in case they have any questions about their products. When we asked the Proctor & Gamble representative what the (U) meant on their Folgers Coffee container, she asked us to wait until she consulted with her supervisor. She came back and informed us that the mark meant that the coffee was " certified kosher". We than asked her how and who certified the coffee to be "kosher" and whether it cost any money to do so. She refused to answer these and other questions. She suggested that we write to their Corporate Public Affairs Department. We than called the Clorox Corporation to ask what the (U) meant on the package of their Glads plastic sandwich bags and she also said that the (U) meant that the plastic bags were "kosher" but refused to answer questions concerning payments the Clorox Corporation has to make in order to be able to print the (U) on their products.

What we learned next, pretty much floored me personally. I learned that major food companies throughout America actually pay a Jewish Tax amounting to hundreds of million of dollars per year in order to receive protection. This hidden tax gets passed, of course, to all Jewish and non-Jewish consumers of the products. The scam is to coerce the companies to pay up or suffer the consequences of a Jewish boycott. Jewish consumers have learned not to buy any kitchen product that does not have the (U) the (K) and other similar markings.

Another shocker was learning who is actually behind these sophisticated "Kosher Nostra Scams." It turns out that the perpetrators of these elaborate extortion schemes are actually Rabbinical Councils that are set up, not just in the U.S. but in other western countries as well. For example, the largest payola operation in the U.S. is run by those who license the (U) symbol. The (U) symbol provides protection for many products sold in the United States. This symbol is managed by the The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations with headquarters at 333 Seventh Avenue in New York City.

The "Kosher Nostra" protection racket starts when an Orthodox Rabbi approaches a company to warn the owners that unless their product is certified as kosher, or "fit for a Jew to eat", they will face a boycott by every Jew in America. Most, if not all of the food companies, succumb to the blackmail because of fear of the Jewish dominated media and a boycott that may eventually culminate in bankruptcy. Also, the food companies know that the cost can be passed on to the consumer anyway. The food companies have kept secret from the general consumer the meaning of the (U) and the amount of money they have to pay the Jewish Rabbis.

It is estimated that the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, which manages the (U) symbol protection racket, controls about 85% of the "Kosher Nostra " certification business. They now employ about 1200 Rabbi agents that are spread through out the U.S. Food companies must first pay an exorbitant application fee and than a large annual fee for the use of the (U) copyright symbol. Secondly, the companies must pay separate fees each time a team of Rabbis shows up to "inspect" the company's operations. Certain food companies are required to hire Rabbis full time at very lucrative salaries.

The amount of money that the non-Jewish consumer has paid the food companies to make up for the hidden Jewish Tax is unknown, but it is estimated to be in the billions since the scam first started. The Orthodox Jewish Councils as well as the food companies keep the amount of the fees very secret. The Wall Street Journal wrote about the problem many years ago, but they have stopped writing about it now.

Only public awareness concerning the "Kosher Nostra Scam" will eventually help stop this swindle of the American consumer. Public education of the scam may lead to an eventual non-Jewish boycott of all products with the (U), (K) or other Jewish protection symbols. I certainly do not need to pay extra for "kosher water", "kosher coffee" or "kosher plastic sandwich bags". "

The (K) however cannot be copyrighted or patented and therefore technically can be put on anything whether truly kosher or not. Jell-O by definition is not Kosher, yet has a K smack dab on the middle of it. I'm not sure why rabbinical associations have not taken Kraft Foods to the cleaners on this, but think perhaps it is overlooked somewhere.

This is the first time I have ever heard the kashrus industry being referred to as a scam. If food was not certified kosher, how would Jewish consumers which foods they could eat and which not?

I've never seen one kosher certified apple, though i may be looking in the wrong place. I'm sure most Jews have a general sense of what is kosher and what is not just in the Torah alone.

Wow. Until now, I always took your rants with a grain of salt, but now I know you can't be trusted whatsoever. This is one of the oldest anti-semitic canards in the book. No one is forcing the food manufacturers to do anything. They willingly choose to pay for the kosher supervision because it will (in certain situations) increase their market share. The increase in market share enables them to further lower their prices. If they are choosing to use it, it's because it's worth it for them (or they foresee it has the potential to be). It's a business decision just like any other. Oftentimes, a product stops having the kosher supervision (even though no ingredients have changed) because the manufacturer has reassesed the situation and decided that although it was previously beneficial to the bottom line, now it isn't.

Tex: What you say is not accurate and you yourself proved it! Non-kosher products may have a single K symbol, but not the OU or OK or other OFFICIAL kosher markers because a single K does not mean anything (except to ignorant unsuspecting consumers) and no one has any rights to it. Therefore a manufacturer can put it on it's label just like it can put on a picture of a happy chasid in a big kipa. However, they do not use the official symbols because they'd get their asses sued if they did (for false advertising or something like that), since those symbols are "owned" by the supervising agencies (not sure if it's actually trademarked or patented or whatever, but it is in some sense "owned" in that one can't use it indiscriminately or without the authorized approval of the "owners"). It's actually happened in the industry that companies have been reprimanded (or even fined) for unauthorized use of these symbols and have been forced to remove the symbol from the package.

Another data point: I have heard that there are even non-Jews who prefer products with kosher supervision as it ensures them that there is an additional level of quality in the manufacturing.

I must agree with the above post by hedyot. This blog has lost credibility in my eyes. If you wanted to write about some of the shenanigans and politics of kashrus supervision in Brooklyn (which is what I expected to read) then you may have something to talk about. But to attack the OU and the kashrus certification process as a whole as a "mafia" which holds the food industry hostage...that is just utter nonsense. As Hedyot states, the decision to add an OU to a product is a business decision. The major food corporations are multi billion dollar enterprises. Even if all the Jews in the country boycotted their products (an absurd scenario that would never occur) they would survive very well with the global market. Also, the vast majority of Jews do NOT demand kosher food. Your analysis of the situation is next to worthless. I am ashamed that a Jew would post such nonsense, lacking all insight.

knhmember,

Your story (or OUs story) is BS and nothing more than propoganda. These feel good stories (such as the one by previous poster who "heard" that some gentiles prefer OU - they might prefer the word "kosher" or "kosher-style" but not OU!) are just designed to make the masses feel mainstream and good about themselves. Many insecure Jews love this story because it means: "See, the Goyim think we're cool too!" "No, we're not wierd, they respect us even more!"

Anyone who knows anything about kashrus or the food industry knows that the story is BOGUS.

I don't believe the OU discouraged the bottled water company against certifying their product - many bottled waters carry the OU symbol. The OU is happy to do so and this is easy, gravy money for them. Don't kid yourself, it's a business just like yeshivas and brochos from "mekubalim."

There is no way in hell the same equipment is used to process seafood and water. No way!

I make no apologies for this blog or any others.
The truth is the pharmaceuticals, food, water, plasticsand a host of industries have been lied to, yes lied to about the kosher certifications.
I know people who worked as mashgichim, including kids out of high school who know squat about kashrus.
It has certainly become a B.S. industry when refrigerators are now being OU certified.
Real easy to look the other way,but you guys are also buying into the propoganda.
ALL NON FOOD ITEMS DO NOT NEED HECHSHERIM, ARE YOU GUYS SO MESSED UP THAT YOU DON'T GET IT?
Getting to the Brooklyn food companies, a family who is involved in so many crimes, members who are felons, yet the whole Brooklyn eats their MEAT.
And you are worrying about kosher water???

Also, I think you should contact the U or K and ask them what the dealio with this is. Lets see if they have a valid answer before we attack.

I know that by pesach it makes a difference if the bags or paper towels have a hechser because of materials that are used to make this product or the packaging it comes in. I knowit sounds extreme but alot of people are machmir.

Also maybe these water companies produce non kosher beverages?

Either way, maybe you can do research by respectfully calling The U.

You never know they might have answers.

Once again, Thank you for deleting those previos posts-I thought i was going to vomit from seeing that again

Are there abuses in the kashrus industry?
Definitely. Just take a look at the scam pulled off by Heineman, Star-K, with the Iowa meat plant, pushing out Chaimowitz, and compromising the kashrus of the Schechita. How many people are eating this "Glatt" schechita and getting screwed? Or the scandal on Ave.J meat market this past Pesach. Where was the Kehilla Kashrus Mashgiach? You mean not once did he go down to the basement and check the plumbas against the manifests?

But,the way you present the Kashrus scene is way over the top and straight out of the Protocols. You lose all credibility.

UO: Despite my objections to your post which I stated above, I do agree that there is corruption within the system (the kashrus system as a whole), it's full of incompetent people who aren't qualified to do the job, that it's full of cronyism, and that the obsession to stamp a hechser on everything including toxic cleaning materials is ridiculous. But that's not the same as accusing the OU of being a protection racket. Or that the entire idea of getting a hechser is blackmail akin to a payola scam.

UO;

1. I am definitely NOT Shlomo.

2. If you took this Kashrus article from somewhere, you are bound to reference and give credit to the source. You did not do this, instead giving it the look like it was your own original chiddush.
Only after you were exposed, did you come up with a lame excuse. Your credibility is shot and all of your previous postings as well as postings to come are thereby tainted and without veracity.

3. Really incredible that a Yoreh Yadin 19 yr old NYU valedictorian is caught in deceit and deception much the same way you accuse the hareidi community of being. Do I hear the word "Hypocrisy"?

4. If this blog falls on it's face, as it now deservedly does due to your exposed lying and plagiarism, I guess you could definitely get a Reporter's job with that Newspaper of Record, The New York Times and take over the position of that young schvartze that was booted out last year for plagiarizing and making up stories.
Think about it! You could be the new Ari Goldman of the Times!! Hehehe.

The greatest Nekomah would then be for your Editor to have you cover Boro Park, Flatbush, Monsey, and Lakewood.

And if this Times gig doesn't work out, maybe our Halal cousins on Flatbush Avenue can get you a job with Al Jezirah.

You've been exposed as a feckless, pusillanimous phoney. Shame on you.

Gross,
Look at these pitiful losers, falling all over themselves to see who can bash us the most.

The facts are, the Kashrus industry has turned out to be another Jewish fraudulent business that is corrupt from top to toe.

Yes, there are some honest guys, but the majority of the hechsherim are worthless, and the facts are that ALL of us are probably eating non-kosher food some of the time.

Hedyot, while the word scam is rather harsh, having my bleach and all non-edibles labeled with a kosher symbol, scam is pretty close to the mark.

Someone sold them on that!

Shlomo,

Your own anger clearly stems from the fact that in the real world you are "stuck" - branded as whatever stereotype an "Ultra Orthodox Jew" receives. This is becaue you are an angry Chabadske forced to wear your beard forever, unable to reconcile it. therefore you are always on the defense, defending only G-d knows what. I know your type. You convince yourself that your "the best" but deep down you know you are nothing.

The "Syms Bash" and "Meeyuskite" were sarcastic. Although I am quite familiar I never was yeshivish. You are making fun of the name "gross" you little boy?

That name was a joke, originating at the beginning of this blog.

UO;

Are there problems in the world of Kashrus. No question. I'm not whitewashing it. In fact, I pointed out two recent flagrant examples in one of my posts, above.

The point I'm trying to get across to you is that your credibility is now "0" because you've been outed not only as a plagiarist, but one of the vilest kind in using Protocols type crude anti-semitic propaganda.

You claim to have a high standard of formal education and I'm sure that between your supposed Semicha training and NYU career you are well versed in logic and effective presentations of points of view. This is totally absent in all of your postings and entries on this blog and casts serious doubt as to the authenticity and veracity of your educational and professional claims.

Were you have only followed such a paradigm based on your supposed training, your impact would have been far more effective and perhaps constructive changes in the areas you've highlighted been effectuated.

Pity.

First of all triangle K may be the worst of the kosher nostra out there. Every controversial kosher item out there has his stamp of approval. Short of actually writing the word pork in the ingredients of a food product, he has no issues of giving his stamp of approval and certifying it as kosher.
The Mezonos Maven scandal is just the last in a long line of jewish food vendors who don't believe in a higher authority. Over the years we have been fed non kosher items from vinegar that had yayin nesech to unkosher meats being sold on Avenue J in Flatbush. Our rabbis whom we rely on to certify an item or store as kosher don't even bother showing up to some of these estalishments because they rely on many leniencies.
